About Naples

Naples lies on the Bay of Naples in southern Italy, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Founded by ancient Greeks as Neapolis, it was the capital of a kingdom for centuries.

Its UNESCO-listed historic centre, churches, underground passages and cuisine, known as the home of pizza, shape its character.

How many days do you need?

Allow at least three days: one for the historic centre and Spaccanapoli, one for the National Archaeological Museum, the seafront and Castel dell'Ovo, and one for Pompeii or Herculaneum. The Amalfi Coast or Capri need extra days.

Where to stay

  • Historic centre — Walking distance to churches and museums; streets can be crowded and noisy.
  • Chiaia — By the sea, calmer and more upscale.
  • Toledo and Piazza del Plebiscito — Central, close to the metro and the ferry port.

From the airport to the city

Naples International Airport (NAP, Capodichino) is about 4 miles northeast of the centre. Alibus coaches link it with Napoli Centrale station (Piazza Garibaldi) and the Molo Beverello port.

Getting around

Metro lines, funiculars and buses serve the city, and the Circumvesuviana commuter train runs to Pompeii and Sorrento. Ferries and hydrofoils to Capri and Ischia leave from the port.

Good to know

  • Watch out for pickpockets on crowded buses and trains.
  • Traffic is heavy and can seem chaotic; take care when crossing streets.
  • Access to Vesuvius can be capacity-limited; book tickets ahead. The currency is the euro.
