About Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, on Croatia's southern Adriatic coast, was for centuries the seat of the independent Republic of Ragusa, a rival of Venice in maritime trade. Its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Intact medieval city walls, the limestone-paved Stradun, Baroque churches and views across the sea to Lokrum island define the city.
How many days do you need?
Allow two days: one for the city walls, the Stradun and the Rector's Palace, and one for Lokrum island and the cable car up Mount Srđ. A third day can go to Ston or the Elaphiti Islands.
Where to stay
- Old Town — Inside the walls; plenty of steps and no cars.
- Ploče — Just east of the walls, with views of the old town.
- Lapad and Babin Kuk — Beaches and larger hotels, linked to the old town by bus.
From the airport to the city
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is at Čilipi, about 12 miles southeast of the city. Airport shuttle buses run to the Pile Gate and the main bus station; taxis are also available.
Getting around
The Old Town is car-free and best explored on foot. Libertas city buses link the Pile Gate with Lapad, Babin Kuk and the port at Gruž, and boats to Lokrum leave from the old harbour.
Good to know
- Walk the walls early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat and cruise-ship crowds.
- Lokrum is a nature reserve; boats run only during the day and no one may stay overnight on the island.
- The currency has been the euro since 2023. The official language is Croatian, and English is widely spoken.
