About Mahébourg

Mahébourg, on the south-east coast of Mauritius, is the main town of the Grand Port District. It is named after the French colonial governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais and developed under French rule in the early 19th century.

A seafront promenade, fishing boats and a history museum recounting the naval battles between France and Britain define the town. Blue Bay Marine Park, known for its coral reefs, and Île aux Aigrettes, where endemic species are protected, are close by.

How many days do you need?

One or two days is enough for the town, the museum and Blue Bay; add a day for boat trips and a visit to Île aux Aigrettes.

From the airport to the city

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is close to the town, a short taxi ride away. Bus lines 9, 10 and 198 also run from the airport to Mahébourg; check the direction of the bus before boarding.

Good to know

  • Traffic drives on the left in Mauritius.
  • Île aux Aigrettes can be visited only on a guided tour.
  • The currency is the Mauritian rupee.
