About Toronto
Toronto, on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, is the capital of the province of Ontario and Canada's most populous city. It is known as one of the most multicultural cities in the world.
A skyline dominated by the CN Tower, neighborhoods shaped by many communities, museums and islands in the lake define its character.
How many days do you need?
Three days is a good start: one for the CN Tower and the waterfront, one for the Royal Ontario Museum, Kensington Market and Chinatown, and one for St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery District and the Toronto Islands. Niagara Falls needs an extra day.
Where to stay
- Downtown — Close to most sights and the subway.
- Yorkville — Near the museums, with upscale shops.
- Old Town and St. Lawrence — Historic buildings, the market and an easy walk to the Distillery District.
From the airport to the city
Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is about 15 miles northwest of downtown. The UP Express train links the airport with Union Station in about 25 minutes, and TTC buses run to subway stations. Billy Bishop Airport on the waterfront handles some regional flights.
Getting around
The TTC runs the subway, streetcar and bus network; pay with a PRESTO card or contactless payment. Ferries to the islands leave from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal.
Good to know
- Winters are cold and snowy; the downtown PATH underground walkway helps in bad weather.
- Tipping is customary in restaurants, and sales tax is usually added on top of listed prices.
- The official languages are English and French, with English dominant in the city. The currency is the Canadian dollar.
