About Tangier

Tangier sits on the African shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Ruled by many powers since the Phoenicians, it was an international zone until the mid-20th century.

The hilltop Kasbah, the whitewashed medina, the Grand Socco square and, west of town, Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules are the main sights.

How many days do you need?

Two days is enough: one for the medina, the Kasbah and the Grand Socco, and one for Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Add a day for a trip to Asilah or Chefchaouen.

Where to stay

  • Medina and Kasbah — Riads and rooftop terraces; steep, narrow lanes.
  • Ville Nouvelle — Around Boulevard Pasteur; hotels, cafés and easy transport.
  • Malabata — On the eastern seafront, with large beachside hotels.

From the airport to the city

Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is about 9 miles southwest of the city. A 'grand taxi' or hotel transfer is the most practical way into town; agree on the fare before getting in.

Getting around

The medina is explored on foot. Blue-and-yellow 'petit taxis' serve the city. From Tanger Ville station, the Al Boraq high-speed train runs to Rabat and Casablanca.

Good to know

  • Ferries to Spain sail from Tanger Med and the city port; check which port your ticket names.
  • Self-appointed guides may approach you in the medina; a polite no is fine.
  • The currency is the Moroccan dirham; taking it out of the country is restricted.
