About Casablanca
Casablanca, on the Atlantic coast, is Morocco's largest city and its economic hub. It grew into a major port under French rule in the early 20th century.
The Hassan II Mosque, built out over the ocean, Art Deco façades along the central boulevards and the Ain Diab corniche define its character.
How many days do you need?
One or two days is enough: one for the Hassan II Mosque, the old medina and the Ain Diab seafront, and one for the Art Deco downtown, Mohammed V Square and the Habous Quarter. The city also works well as a starting point for Rabat or Marrakesh.
Where to stay
- Centre-Ville — Close to the tram and to Casa Voyageurs and Casa Port stations.
- Ain Diab and the Corniche — Oceanfront hotels, restaurants and nightlife.
- Maarif — A lively modern district with shops and cafés.
From the airport to the city
Mohammed V International Airport (CMN) is about 19 miles south of the city. ONCF trains run from the station beneath the terminal to Casa Voyageurs and other city stations; taxis leave from outside the terminal.
Getting around
Tram and busway lines link the centre, the seafront and the suburbs. Red 'petit taxis' handle short trips within the city; ask for the meter to be switched on.
Good to know
- The Hassan II Mosque is one of the few in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit inside, on guided tours; check tour times in advance.
- The Al Boraq high-speed train links Casablanca with Tangier via Rabat.
- The currency is the Moroccan dirham; taking it out of the country is restricted.
