About Salzburg
Salzburg lies on the Salzach River in western Austria, at the edge of the Alps. Ruled for centuries by prince-archbishops, it is the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Its UNESCO-listed Baroque old town, the hilltop fortress, palaces and the Salzburg Festival held each summer shape its character.
How many days do you need?
Two days are enough: one for the old town, Getreidegasse, Mozart's Birthplace and Hohensalzburg Fortress, and one for Mirabell Palace and gardens and Hellbrunn Palace. A third day can go to the Salzkammergut lakes or Hallstatt.
Where to stay
- Altstadt — On the left bank of the river, in the middle of the sights.
- Neustadt and around Mirabell — On the right bank, within walking distance of the old town.
- Around the main station — Convenient for trains, a short bus ride from the centre.
From the airport to the city
Salzburg Airport W. A. Mozart (SZG) is about 2.5 miles west of the centre. Trolleybus and bus lines link it with the old town and the main station; a taxi ride is short.
Getting around
Public transport relies largely on trolleybuses. The old town is pedestrian-friendly, and you can reach the fortress by funicular or on foot.
