About Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main lies on the Main River in the German state of Hesse. Once the place where Holy Roman emperors were elected and crowned, it is now a financial centre and home to the European Central Bank.
Skyscrapers stand beside the rebuilt old town square, while riverside museums and apple wine taverns shape its character.
How many days do you need?
Two days are enough: one for the Römerberg, the Cathedral, the rebuilt old town and the Main Tower, and one for the Städel on the Museum Embankment and the Sachsenhausen district. Add a day for a trip to the Rhine Valley.
Where to stay
- Altstadt and centre — Walking distance to the Römerberg and the Zeil shopping street.
- Sachsenhausen — South of the river, near the museums and apple wine taverns.
- Westend — Quiet and green, close to the Palmengarten.
From the airport to the city
Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is about 7 miles southwest of the centre. S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 run from the regional station at Terminal 1 to the main station (Hauptbahnhof) and the centre in about 15 minutes; long-distance trains also stop at the airport.
Getting around
U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses share the RMV fare system. The centre is compact and largely walkable.
Good to know
- Hotels fill up quickly during major trade fairs; check the fair calendar before you book.
- The area around the main station can feel uneasy late at night; stay alert.
- Most shops are closed on Sundays. The currency is the euro.
