About Kumasi
Kumasi, in Ghana's interior, is the country's second-largest city. From the 17th century it was the capital of the powerful Ashanti Kingdom, and it is still the seat of the Asantehene, the Ashanti king.
Manhyia Palace, Kejetia Market, one of the largest in West Africa, and nearby kente-weaving and craft villages carry its cultural heritage.
Natural phenomena and seasons
- Harmattan (December–February) — From December–February, the dry, dusty harmattan wind from the Sahara reduces visibility and leaves a haze in the air. A mask can help people with sensitive airways.
How many days do you need?
Two days are enough: one for the Manhyia Palace Museum, Kejetia Market and the city centre, and one for Lake Bosumtwi or the craft villages nearby.
Where to stay
- City centre (Adum) — Close to the market and museums; busy and crowded.
- Ahodwo — A calmer area with several hotels.
- Nhyiaeso — Leafy and residential, with restaurants nearby.
From the airport to the city
Prempeh I International Airport (KMS) lies northeast of the centre and mainly handles domestic flights from Accra. Taxis take you into the city.
Getting around
In town, use taxis and tro-tros, the shared minibuses; ride-hailing apps also operate. Buses run regularly to Accra.
