About Jaipur
Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan in northwestern India, was founded in 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II as one of India's first planned cities. Its walled city, called the Pink City for its terracotta-coloured façades, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Hilltop forts such as Amer and Nahargarh, the honeycomb façade of the Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and the astronomical instruments of Jantar Mantar shape a visit.
Natural phenomena and seasons
- Monsoon rains (July–September) — July–September is monsoon season: short but heavy downpours, high humidity and occasional flooding. Keep your plans flexible for transport delays.
How many days do you need?
Allow two to three days: one for Amer Fort, ideally early in the morning, and one for the Pink City's Hawa Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and bazaars, ending with sunset at Nahargarh Fort. Jaipur is often combined with Delhi and Agra on the "Golden Triangle" route.
Where to stay
- Pink City (walled city) — Heritage havelis close to the sights; busy streets.
- C-Scheme — Central and quieter, with restaurants nearby.
- Bani Park and Civil Lines — Heritage hotels in calm residential areas.
From the airport to the city
Jaipur International Airport (JAI) is at Sanganer, about 8 miles south of the walled city. Prepaid and app-based taxis are the usual way into town.
Getting around
Auto-rickshaws, taxis and app-based cabs are the main ways to get around; agree on the fare first or use an app. The metro line runs from Mansarovar to Badi Chaupar in the walled city.
