About Trabzon

Trabzon entered history as Trapezus, founded in antiquity by colonists from Sinope. From 1204 to 1461 it was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond and one of the Silk Road's gateways to the Black Sea.

The mountains rising behind the city open onto green highland pastures and deep valleys. Sumela Monastery, carved into a cliff, and Uzungöl are among the province's most visited places.

In 2025 Trabzon welcomed about 1.45 million tourists, 808,000 of them foreign and 640,000 domestic.
