Kars

Kars stands on a high plateau near the Armenian border. Buildings from the late-19th-century Russian period give it a distinctive architectural look.

The ruins of Ani, one of the important cities of the Middle Ages, are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Lake Çıldır freezes in winter; Kars kaşar cheese and goose are local specialities.
