About Ankara

Ankara's ancient name was Ankyra; under the Galatians and Romans it was an important regional centre. The famous inscription listing the emperor's deeds can still be read on the walls of the Temple of Augustus.

Declared Türkiye's capital on 13 October 1923, Ankara quickly grew into a planned capital. Today it is the country's second most populous city.
